A couple of weeks ago, both of my kids got the flu. It started with my daughter, and then a few days later it hit my son. It was the kind of flu that hit hard and fast and required lots and lots of downtime and rest.
In the process, I felt the Holy Spirit speaking to me on the topic of rest.
As I resisted the urge to go and do and leaned into the rest required for my kids to heal, God spoke to my heart that rest indeed is productive. Not just when we’re sick, but every single day.

It’s not just that it’s good to take a break from productivity to rest. Rest itself is one of the most productive things we can do for our bodies and spirits.
Physically, it allows our bodies to heal and rejuvenate. It gives our nervous system and hormones a chance to regulate and recenter.
Mentally, it allows us to process and order our thoughts. It gives the space for boredom which leads to some of the greatest creativity.
Spiritually, it quiets us so we can listen and hear God speak and allow His love to work in us.
What we call productive is often distraction from what God is actually calling us to. He is calling us to Himself, the giver of rest. That is His invitation - that we would come unto Him and find rest. Constant doing is not what God desires. He desires our hearts.
Whether you are in a season that specifically requires rest or you’re looking to incorporate more biblical rest into your daily life, here are seven bible verses on rest that will encourage you on your journey.
Bible Verses on Rest
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
Return to your rest, my soul,
for the Lord has been good to you.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:
“In repentance and rest is your salvation,
in quietness and trust is your strength…”
