Give us This Day our Daily Bread

Today I was reminded of why Jesus teaches us to pray: “Give us this day our daily bread.” My kids were asking to “do something fun” today, but the only thing I had planned was laundry. Amid my kids’ disappointment, I decided to practice slowing down and listening to the Still Small Voice (instead of my own emotions) for what was needed. In this moment of pause, I felt led to get out the Hotwheels tracks. Yes, God will lead us in such small things as this. The kids proceeded to build and shout and laugh together joyfully this morning while I tackled my mundane tasks.
In that short moment of pause, that brief deep breath, God guided me. When we seek Him, we will find Him. He is not far from us. He only asks that we turn toward Him. He only asks that we deny ourselves, that we surrender control, and that we acknowledge and look to Him in our need.
It would be tempting to think that Hotwheels are the magical answer to motherhood, but the truth is God gave me what I needed for today. And He’ll do the same tomorrow. And He’ll do the same for anyone who chooses to heed His voice. If I try to use today’s answers for tomorrow, I’ll be disappointed. Just like the manna in the desert, it’ll rot. But when I come back to Him again and again, He is faithful to supply all that I need for today. He is faithful to give me this day, my daily bread. I can rest in the joy of this moment knowing that tomorrow His mercies will be new again, and I can return to Him for tomorrow’s guidance when tomorrow comes.
