6-Step Bible Study Method: A Simple Guide to Studying the Bible

Aug 27
5 min read

I have been a lifelong reader of the Bible, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I made the transition from just reading God’s Word to truly engaging with it on a deeper level.

As a young believer, I enjoyed learning the fundamental Bible stories and memorizing scriptures. I even read the Bible on my own every evening. I wanted to know everything there was to know. This foundational study of the Bible laid the groundwork for my faith.

Over time, though, God began to show me that the Bible isn’t just for learning about Him. It’s also for walking with Him moment by moment, day by day.

Alive, Active, and Personal

We can never know and understand all there is to know in the Bible because it is a living and active Word (Hebrews 4:12). Even if we memorized every word within the Bible, there would still be more to discover, because the Holy Spirit activates the Word within us to speak what we need when we need it.

God uses His Word to speak personally to each of us. When we open the Bible with an open heart and spirit to hear from Him, He will be faithful to show up. He knows exactly where we are, what our needs are, and how He wants to grow us. He will use His scripture to accomplish His good and perfect plan in our lives if we approach Him with a heart that is willing to hear from Him and be transformed.

The Bible is unlike any other book. While most books are for our intellectual growth, God’s Word exists for our spiritual growth. In other words, it’s not our own knowledge of the Bible that changes us from the inside out but rather the power of the Holy Spirit that activates the Word within us. It’s one of the magnificent mysteries of God that has been proven again and again in His people. His Word is alive and active and transformative.

6 Steps to Study the Bible

It’s great to know that God wants to speak to us through His Word, but it’s another entirely to actually get into the Word to hear from Him.

When I began my journey to engaging more with the Word of God, I didn’t have a specific plan. It took time for me to find what worked well for me and helped me hear from God. After a while of trying different things, I landed on a method that has now stood the test of time. To this day, I use these steps in my personal Bible study.

If you have wanted to start studying the Bible but haven’t known where to start or if you have been studying the Bible for a while and are ready to go deeper, these six steps are a great place to start.

  1. Invite the Holy Spirit to lead your time in the Word – It doesn’t have to be a fancy prayer. Just pause and center your spirit on God. Posture yourself to read from your spirit, not your brain. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you, guide you, and speak to you.

  1. Read the Bible2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that “All scripture is God breathed and is useful…” It doesn’t matter what you read or how much you read. It’s no better or worse to read more or less, and no book of the Bible is better than the other. It is all useful for equipping us to do the work God has prepared for us to do. So, open the Word and read what works for you.

  1. Choose a key verse to meditate on – Find one verse from what you have read and meditate on it. This may mean reading it a few times, highlighting/underlining it, or writing it down. Taking a moment to really chew on an individual verse gives it a chance to sink down deeply within your heart.

  1. Write down key points – Take the time to reflect on some key takeaways from what you have read. What stood out to you as you read? What was the Holy Spirit speaking within you? How does this relate to what God has been doing in your life? Write these thoughts down.

  1. Find related scriptures – The best resource for understanding the Bible is the Bible! Go deeper in scripture by looking at other scriptures that relate to what you’re reading. You can look up other verses that you already know, find verses on a specific topic in the concordance (found in the back of most Bibles), or research related verses on the internet. Studying related scriptures will give greater depth and context to what you are reading.

  1. Pray for God to continue to work His truth in your life – We are not transformed spiritually on our own. It is only by the grace of God and the work of the Holy Spirit. Take a moment to pray and ask God to continue His good work both in you and through you. The Bible is not meant to just be internalized; it’s meant to be lived out. Ask God to bring His Word to life in your heart and life.

This method has helped me so much in my own time with God and walk with God, and I pray it will help you, too. Keep in mind, these six steps are not a one-size-fits-all formula. Seek God as you find what works for you. Whether it’s through these six simple steps or some other variation, God will speak to you when you open His Word.

Remember Why

While it’s great to have a good Bible study routine, the most important thing to come back to again and again is the “why” behind Bible study.

We don’t study God’s Word to gain more head-knowledge. We study God’s Word to be transformed by Him from glory to glory until the day Jesus returns (2 Corinthians 3:18). When we remember why we are reading the Bible, the task becomes far less of a chore and much more of a joy and privilege.

God has so much to teach us and He wants to grow us more and more into His likeness. All He asks is that we come. He will meet us there.
